Uria M. Longcore

Uria May Longcore, born May 24th of 1925, shed her physical form and left the earth to be with her Lord on January 8, 2020, at the age of 94. She was surrounded by her adoring family in her home, built by her father’s hands, where she lived for many decades, at 1520 Duck Lake Rd. in Muskegon. Uria, affectionately known as “Jerri” to her many friends, is survived by her loyal son Don DeLong, who gave round the clock care to his mother for the final years of her long and fulfilled life. In addition to Don DeLong, Jerri left behind a legacy of unconditional love and compassion in her grandchildren Sarah DeLong and Matthew DeLong, and great granddaughter Jazmine DeLong. Don’s wife Cindy Mendez was by her side til the very end, as well, assisting Don with the many duties of caring for Jerri, the family matriarch, who was truly and deeply loved and cherished by so many. Susan Ware, to whom Jerri was a lifelong mother figure, was also indispensable to her care, and stuck lovingly by her side til the very end.

Jerri was preceded in death by her parents Uria and Bessy Barnhart, and eight siblings John, Millie, Ruben, Ralph, Luke, Marie, Roy, and Nell. Additionally, Jerri was blessed to have found true love and romance in her golden years with Clifford Longcore, the love of her life and devoted husband who passed away before her, as well. Over the course of her life, Jerri made countless friends who were drawn into her orbit by her magnetic personality and infectious optimism. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends left behind.

Jerri did her duty as a member of WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the Navy during World War II, where she served her country faithfully and honorably. After the war, she used her G.I entitlements to earn her pilot’s license, which she used to soar valiantly across the skies up and down the lakeshore of Lake Michigan and to visit friends and family in cities like Detroit. Her courage and valor in the Navy also inspired her granddaughter, Sarah DeLong, to join the Army to fight for her country many years later.

Jerri was a devoted Christian for the entirety of her life, possessing an unwavering faith as a member of Faith Baptist Church in Dalton, Michigan for over 50 years. Her faith in God and commitment to Christian values was one of the defining characteristics of her life. She also retired from Continental Motors after over 30 years there, where she began her career as a machinist, but was eventually promoted to the position of quality inspection officer. While at Continental Motors, Jerri organized and hosted a charitable organization that helped pay for the education of young men and women in South America, a rewarding endeavor that helped at least one young man attain a degree in medicine.

Funeral services for Uria May Longcore will be held at Faith Baptist Church, located at 3593 Whitehall Rd. in Muskegon, Michigan, and will be officiated by Pastor Swieringa on January 13, 2020. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, with the service held at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon downstairs at Faith Baptist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Pound Buddies of Muskegon, as Jerri was a lifelong animal lover who advocated for the rescue and adoption of animals in need.
