Donald Earl Wirtz

Donald Earl Wirtz, 86, of L’Anse, Michigan, passed away on April 8, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel and Catherine Wirtz, sisters, Shirley Martin, Doris Self and an infant brother.

Donald is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa Wirtz, his nine children, Jeanne Sommerville, Eileen Stephens, Anita Wirtz, Dan Wirtz, Doug Wirtz, Derek Wirtz, Diane Wirtz, and also Sean and Mick Wirtz.  He leaves behind grandchildren, Bryce (his best buddy), Ja’Ki, Alexandria, Christopher, Bryan, Eric, Todd, Amy, Teddy, Matthew, Emily, Krystal, Tyler, Taryn, Mickey, Maddie and Sage.  He is also survived by his brother, Robert Wirtz of Chelsea, Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie, Michigan.  He was a 47 year member of the Michigan Regional Carpenters Union.

Don’s passion was helping others in any way he could.  He most loved working with the VFW crew making pasties every month and was usually the first one there on those mornings getting the meat mixer set up.  He loved doing carpentry work and enjoyed spending weekends at our camp which he designed and built.  He also enjoyed fishing whenever he could and loved to go deer hunting.  He always kept us laughing at his lame dad jokes and crazy sense of humor especially his story about Herbert the goat.  Bryce will always remember him trying to cheat when he played “go fish” and he had his own board that he would spend hours playing solitaire on evyer day on the couch. One of his favorite thing was his flip phone which in the last few months he only used to tell the time. Everyone who knew him will have their own special story to tell and we could go on and on telling about his antics.

A Celebration of Life will be held sometime in the future with his family and friends at the L’Anse VFW Post as he had requested.

We are so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. He was a special man who we will always remember at the pasty sales and will cherish our friendship with Don. Never a dull moment for sure, may he rest in peace and be cracking the whip at all the pasty sales in the future. We will make you proud Don. Hugs and prayers going out to all of you now. Love you all.
