Donald E. Studaven

Donald was born to Ethel Studaven in Chicago, IL.  His mother died of tuberculosis before he was five.  He had one brother, Rubin, who also died of tuberculosis in his teens.  Don was raised by his aunt and uncle, Hannah and Les Duerson.

Once Don became involved in Scouting as an adult, there was no stopping him. He started his professional career as the ranger at Camp Harrison in Calumet City, IL.  In 1963, Don went on to become the ranger at Kiwanis Scout Camp.

Serving as the ranger of Kiwanis and Fort Dearborn until 1986, Don was then named as the Owasippe Scout Reservation Director of Properties in Blue Lake Township, MI.

Don and his wife Charleen decided to make their home in Blue Lake Township where Don served as trustee and was on the Township Planning Commission until 2000 when he was elected Supervisor of Blue Lake Township.  He was elected to three terms.

Don also served as chair of the Muskegon County Chapter of Michigan Townships Association and as a member of the Muskegon County Silent Observer.

Don met his wife Charleen while working at the Cub Scout Day Camp Program at Kiwanis Scout Camp.  They have four children: Michael (Robin), Jeffrey (Kathleen), Aileen (Randy), and Howard (Christine).  There are six grandchildren: Thomas, Lisa, David, Jason, Ashley and Benjamin; and seven great-grandchildren.

When reflecting on his life and involvement in scouting, Don noted “Respect life, take care of our earth, respect yourself and have some fun while doing it.”

You are so loved, Donald, and will be missed more than you can know.

Char and family, so very sorry to hear of Don’s passing. I enjoyed the years of working with him through the Township. He was always very kind. I also enjoyed talking with you when he would bring you to our annual dinner. My deepest sympathies.
