Dennis Lee “Denny” Heistand

On May 7, 2019, Dennis Lee Heistand, “Denny”, father of two and father-figure to many more, passed away in his home at the age of 72.

Denny was born in Muskegon on August 24, 1946 to Orvil Heistand and Inez (Holmes) Heistand. He was a 1964 graduate of Muskegon Heights High School.  Beginning in 1965 Denny spent 15 years both in the chemical labs and in management roles at Ott / Story / Cordova Chemical companies until the final bankruptcy and closure.  Shortly after, Denny worked for others in the tree care business and bartended at various venues as well.  After a few years of working for others, he opened his own Whitehall-based business, Denny’s Tree Service, which will continue forward without Denny’s leadership from the dugout.

Denny was a lifelong fan of camping at Interlochen State Park, whether that involved extended family trips with dozens of people overtaking parts of the north campground, or was limited to a guys’ fishing trip Memorial Day weekend. Regardless of how many people surrounded his campsite, the breakfast-for-all hospitality was well known.  So were the massive fish fries that Denny would host.  Almost everyone who has ever fished with Denny has witnessed his uncanny skill and a sixth sense with a fishing pole.  Not many people can tell a tale of even one time catching more fish than Denny while fishing beside him.  An avid small game and whitetail hunter, Denny’s successes with the trusty 12-gauge are numerous as well.

Denny is survived by his son Marc (Theresa) Heistand of Dewitt, his daughter Renee Allen of Brighton, and four grandchildren; Brad Allen, Jack Allen, Molly Heistand, and Drake Allen. He is also survived by sisters Linda Anderson of Muskegon and Jan Parker (Don) of Rockford, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of sending flowers, Denny would rather you donate of your time and money to someone in need.

A Celebration of Denny’s life will take place on Monday, May 27th. Please join Denny’s family and friends for an open-house style gathering at The Northside Pub located at 2353 Holton Road, Muskegon, Michigan 49445.  Stop by anytime between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m.  The main restaurant is closed on Memorial Day but the Banquet Room entrance will be open for Denny’s event.  Casual attire is encouraged, floral arrangements are not. Very sorry to learn of the passing of your father. His presence at the campground at Interlochen will certainly be missed…..

Marc and Theresa, Renee and Grandkids – Denny was a truly unique kind of guy and I always looked forward to seeing him, wherever that was. Camping at Interlochen just won’t be the same without him.
    With love and sadness,
    Cousin Di
