Aileen June Horton

Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Aileen June Horton, age 87, passed away Saturday September 12, 2020. She was born on June 7, 1933 to Roy and Elizabeth Zimmerman in Muskegon, Michigan.

Aileen treasured her family, was devoted to her friends, and will be deeply missed. Her home was one filled with love, laughter, family and friends. Anyone who knew Aileen saw her flair for making new friends and treating them as family. If a life can be measured by the diversity of people who loved her, or had been her friend, Aileen had a very fulfilling life. At her home, Aileen truly enjoyed hosting dinners with family and friends, birthday parties, Red Hat, Ambucs, and Church gatherings, and weddings. She enjoyed an occasional shopping trip (because a new pair of shoes was calling her name). And even though houseplants didn’t stand a chance, her outdoor gardens flourished from her loving attention.

Wishing to be more active outside of her home, Aileen volunteered to work at Laketon Jr. High as a librarian. Following that, she worked at both Reeths Puffer and Orchard View Community Schools where she coordinated and was an escort to senior travel groups. In 1979, she formed her own travel agency, American Royal Travel, until selling the agency in 1987. With her adventurous spirit and passion for travel, she continued to travel extensively while escorting groups throughout the US (Hawaii being her favorite destination), to Canada, and the Caribbean. Having a kind and generous heart, Aileen formed lifelong friendships in each destination.

Aileen is lovingly remembered by her son Ryan (Cheryl) Horton, grandson Barry (Amanda) Ghezzi, great grandchildren Isabella, Nolan and Sophea Ghezzi; son Terry Horton, grandson Justin Horton, and great granddaughter Blake DeLano; granddaughter Joanna (Jim) Bennick, great grandchildren Zack, Brendan, Sean and Ally Bennick; granddaughter Dawn (Keith) Nykamp, great grandchildren Jonas and Rowan Nykamp; grandson Pete (Mandy) DeBoer, great grandchildren Emerson and Oliver DeBoer; and many nephews, nieces, and friends.

An outdoor service of remembrance will be celebrated 3:00 pm Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church (1206 Whitehall Road, Muskegon, MI 49445), Pastor Bill Uetricht officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Aileen’s memory may be made to to help find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. Envelopes will also be available at the service.
