Obituary

On Sunday February 12, 2017, Otto Wm. (Chip) Smith, Jr.,49 years old, sped on across the waters into Heaven (in his Four Winns boat). We’re sure with his booming voice and hearty laugh, no announcement of his arrival was necessary! It was truly a very unexpected trip!

After a ride along the heavenly waters with his Uncle Boots (Art Curow, Jr.)., another boating enthusiast, Otto stopped to play a round of golf with his Dad, Otto Sr. and his brother-in-law, Pat (Mo) Mulready. Then stopping to be reunited with his best friend, Todd LeRoux!

Otto (Chip), Jr., left behind him, his most prized possession, the love of his life, his beautiful daughter, Amanda Lauher-Smith. He was an extremely proud and caring father, never tired of speaking of her, spending time with her, arguing with her, and loving her! Otto was so proud of Amanda’s accomplishments while she was a student at Mona Shores High School. He attended all her sporting events and was her #1 supporter. Now that she is a student at GVSU and doing well, his buttons were bursting!

Otto (Chip), Jr., was born in Muskegon, Mi., on Mother’s Day Sunday May 14, 1967. He came into this world on a Sunday and left on a Sunday! Otto was currently employed at L3. He loved animals of all kinds and had several different pets over the years, leaving behind his latest one Spaz! Sometimes he would bring home “road kill”, freeze it, later boil it, clean the bones and assemble it. One afternoon at the beach he dug up the remains of a deer, brought all the bones home, cleaned them, and assembled them on the living room floor!

Besides Amanda, Otto leaves to mourn him his mother Althea , brothers, Victor (Laura), Edward (Sheila), Andy (Kim) and his sister Geralyn Mulready. His girlfriend, Jessica Schultz, special friends, the Alan Carson family, Gina and Paul Burnip, Craig McPherson, Eric Anderson, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews, and two aunts and one uncle. Otto was preceded in death by his Dad, brother-in-law, best friend, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Celebration of Otto’s life will be held on Friday March 3, 2017, at the Viking Lodge, 3132 Lakeshore Dr., Muskegon from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. with a luncheon and a toddy or two. Memorials may be made to the Amanda Lauher-Smith Education Fund for her continuing education, in care of Community Shores Bank 1030 W. Norton Ave. Muskegon, Michigan 49441. Oh, don’t forget to wear your sandals! Otto’s organs were donated to the Gift of Life to help others, as was his way, and ironically, were harvested on National Donor Day. Cremation has been handled by Shoreline Memorial Services.
