Passed Away: April 11th, 2016
ObituaryOur beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Eleanor Rose Ginther, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 11, 2016, after a long, courageous battle with dementia. Eleanor was born on December 23, 1922, to Anton and Esther (Szabo) Ginther in Galesburg, Michigan. Eleanor attended public schools in Galesburg and graduated in 1940. She married Raymond Frederick Samson on August 26, 1943, in VanBuren, Arkansas, where Ray was stationed.
Elly spent the entirety of her life touching and caring for the people around her. Her love for her husband was unrivaled and her affection for her children came to a close second. She doted on her grandchildren and put a great deal of time into blessing their lives. Even as a great-grandmother, she touched every child. Her family was truly her legacy, a story of love and strength that will go on for centuries. She even had a way of loving complete strangers with a remarkable affect. While working for 20 years at Western Michigan University’s book store, she had the chance to touch many lives of those who passed through her field of influence. Her humor was warm, her smile genuine, and even those who only met her once knew they had met the true definition of a kindred soul. Elly left her mark on the world and those who had the privilege of being in her life will never forget her.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her infant son, Wayne, her parents, her two sisters, Esther Birmingham, Velma (Val) Doyle, one brother, Anton Ginther Jr., and a nephew, ‘Sonny’ Ginther. Her legacy continues on by her husband, Ray Samson of Whitehall, Ray and Brenda Samson of Pleasanton, TX, as well as Sondra and Timothy Cross of Whitehall, MI. Also through her grandchildren; Kara (Samson) Ritthaler, Kristi (Samson) Carroll, Kelli (Cross)Van Donkelaar, Daniel Cross, Christopher Cross, Karissa (Cross) Van Donkelaar, Katie Cross, Stephanie Cross, and Tiffanie Cross. Her legacy will continue to be lived on by twelve great-grandchildren, her sister, Margaret Ford, her sister-in-law Patricia Williams, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 12 noon at the Victory Baptist Church 308 W. Milham, Portage, Michigan.
