ObituaryCarl E. Carlson of Spring Lake passed away on February 27, 2016 at age 78. Carl was born in Cadillac, Michigan on November 14, 1937 to the late Carl A. and Mary G. Carlson. He leaves behind children, Leisa (Dan) Tyler of Muskegon, Vincent (Jennifer Sleeper) Carlson of Muskegon, Kristen Kirkpatrick of Parma, Michigan, Eric (Nancy) Carlson of Lake Orion, Michigan; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Teresa Tyler. Carl attended Muskegon Public Schools, Muskegon Community College, Western Michigan University and Michigan State University. Retired since 1993, Carl was a teacher with the Department of Corrections for twenty years and for twelve years with the Jackson Northwest Schools, where he also coached basketball. While in Jackson, he directed the city’s tennis program where he had a state champion team. A life-long tennis player, he was a highly-ranked junior player and played high school and college tennis. Well-known in Michigan tennis circles, Carl played in countless tournaments and on numerous travel teams. He loved to play KENO at Brann’s and Booyahs. Carl leaves behind many friends, especially at Norton Pines Athletic Club and throughout West Michigan. There will be no visitation or service of any kind. A memorial party will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
