ObituaryJulie Karin Helmers, age 75 of Ferrysburg, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015, at home after a short illness. Julie was born November 25, 1939 to Albert and Barbara (VanderNoot) Jordan in Grand Haven, Michigan.
She is survived by her two children, Eric Helmers of Norton Shores, and Kerry Gorman, of the Windward Islands; grandchildren: Robert Gorman, Elizabeth Gorman and Katherine Gorman, brother Albert (Mary) Jordan, Kalkaska; sisters Patricia (Al) DeHaan, Ferrysburg; Barbara (Mark) Ritter, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Betsy (David) Fullagar, Los Gatos, CA; Merrily (Don) Groeneveld, Ferrysburg; sister-in-law, Kelcey Jordan, Fruitport, MI and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Randy Jordan, and sister, Joy Benkert, and ex-husband Jack Helmers.
Julie attended Central Michigan University and earned a degree in Sociology and Education. She taught in the elementary grades in the Grand Haven school system for ten years.
Julie’s swimming pool was a regular gathering place for family and friends on most summer days.
She loved playing slot machines in Las Vegas and local Indian casinos, and traveled to South Africa with her five sisters to go on safari and made many trips to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Until just weeks before her death, Julie worked at American House, an assisted living home where she passed medications and took care of the elderly. Next to being a mother, this was perhaps her most rewarding career.
